With the Church's news release this past Friday, February 22, 2013, and with the announcement of the newly created missions in this area of southern California in the Church News February 23, we wanted to tell everyone reading this blog the information we have so far. Many have asked questions so here we will attempt to answer as best we can with the information we have. (Please know that this may not be exactly correct as we move toward the July 1 effective date).
Yes, we will be replaced on or about July 1 of this year. Every missionary has a release date, and we are no exception! There was some question because of a letter written to the newly arrived elders' parents when I (Sister Godwin) mentioned serving with the new missionaries for 18 months. Sorry, it was a mistake on my part.
Effective July 1, 2013, three stakes of the current nine stakes within the boundaries of the California San Bernardino Mission will be in the newly created and re-named California Redlands Mission. Four stakes from the Riverside, California mission will also be in the Redlands Mission, making a total of 7 stakes or zones (zone's are generally in a stake geographical area).
The six remaining stakes in the San Bernardino mission will be in the new California Rancho Cucamonga Mission in addition to one stake from the California Arcadia Mission. It sounds confusing, but when you see it from our vantage point, it makes total sense. With the recent announcement in General Conference by President Thomas S. Monson, inviting 18-year old elders and 19-year old sisters to serve full-time missions, the California missions have been told to expect somewhere around 250 missionaries. As you can imagine, that amount of missionaries would be very difficult (not impossible, of course!) for one mission president and office staff. With three missions - Riverside, the re-named Redland's mission and the new Rancho Cucamonga mission each will have somewhere around 200 + or - making a total of around 600 instead of 500 that would have been expected before the announcement of a third mission. It will take a lot of commitment from the member's and leaders to feed, support and help in finding efforts to keep all of the missionaries busy teaching. It is all very exciting and we hope to convey that excitement to all of the wonderful missionaries that are serving here. On the June 25th transfer, the areas in which missionaries are prayerfully assigned will determine which mission the missionaries will be serving for the remainder of their mission.
